Kristin Folsland Olsen

The strongest one on the expedition.

Kristin spent her childhood in Drammen, a growing city outside of Oslo. There is a lot of nice forest around Drammen, where she and her dog climbed trees, swam in lakes and jumped from stone to stone. After high school, she left the city life and moved to her paradise, Lofoten!

She did a year at Lofoten folkehögskole together with Vera. It was a year full of photography, snowboarding, crazy dancing and freezing. During the year, she was bitten by the “Lofot bug” and Lofoten became her home.

Even if she has returned every year to the magic mountains and fjords of Lofoten, where she is a kayak guide during the summer month, she has been all over the world in the last 6 years. Climbing trips to the USA and Australia, saving the river dolphin in India, collecting coconuts on Cock Island and celebrating Vera’s birthday in New Zealand have all been highlights of the various trips she has partaken. Yet, even during all of this, she has also had time for school and studies in Tromsö, Sogndal and Sweden.

It is possible that Kristin was a fish in her former life. No one has a chance against her in underwater rugby. She loves the ocean! Surfing, kayaking, jumping and diving are things that take her life into another dimension.

For those who know Kristin it is probably difficult to understand that she is spending a winter in the arctic with 4 months without sunlight. Because, as much as she loves the ocean she loves the sun. On a sunny day it is impossible to keep her inside. She has to enjoy every minute of the sun, so it is going to be interesting to see how she will handle 24 hours of sun light.

It was Kristin who came up with the idea of crossing Spitsbergen, and it didn’t take her long to convince Vera and Ingebjörg to join in. Maybe this was not a difficult task, but an endearing quality of Kristin is that she has a lot of ideas and principles that she stands up for.

Kristin is the one on the expedition who: is going to create most of the songs, open most of the thermoses, make most of the tracks, take most of the pictures and close the fewest “tent doors”.
